6-Day Marangu Route – Kilimanjaro
Trek Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route, staying in mountain huts and enjoying an additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut before your summit attempt.
Itinerary
The Marangu Route is a classic approach to Mount Kilimanjaro and the only route on the mountain offering hut accommodation throughout the trek. This 6-day itinerary includes an additional acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, allowing trekkers more time to adjust to the increasing altitude.
The journey begins through the lush montane rainforest before progressing into the open heath and moorland around Horombo. After the acclimatization day, the route continues across the alpine desert towards Kibo Hut before the challenging summit attempt to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.
After reaching the summit, descend to Horombo Hut before making the final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate and onward to Moshi.
After breakfast, drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where you will complete the park registration formalities and meet your mountain crew. The hike begins through the lush montane rainforest, following a well-established trail surrounded by dense vegetation and birdlife.
Keep an eye out for blue and colobus monkeys as you gradually gain altitude. After several hours, arrive at Mandara Hut, where you will have dinner and settle in for your first night on the mountain. If time and energy allow, you can take a short walk towards Maundi Crater for beautiful surrounding views.

Today is dedicated to acclimatization. After breakfast, leave your main luggage at Horombo Hut and take a gradual hike towards the higher slopes around Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge.
This allows your body to spend time at a higher altitude before returning to Horombo Hut to sleep. Enjoy spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo, then spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the next stage of the climb.

From there, continue along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 m. After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs at the summit, begin the descent towards Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.
The long descent provides a welcome opportunity to return to lower altitude and enjoy a well-earned dinner and rest.
