Karatu
Karatu sits in the highlands between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, making it a natural overnight stop on many northern Tanzania safari routes.
The landscape is noticeably different from the dry savannah further west. Green hills, farms, coffee plantations and cooler highland air give the area a slower feel after a day in the parks.
Its biggest advantage is location. Karatu works particularly well for travellers visiting Ngorongoro Crater, with many safari lodges and camps in and around the town. It can also be used as a base while travelling between Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
For Safari Convoy, I would present Karatu as part of the journey, rather than trying to sell it as a major wildlife destination in its own right.
Best for
- Ngorongoro Crater visits
- Northern Circuit safaris
- Coffee experiences
- Highland scenery
- Overnight safari stays
- Travellers who prefer lodge stays outside the parks
